Oil Spill Update
As of July 1st weathered oil has washed ashore on Ship Island. Below is an official statement from the National Park Service:
Beaches within Gulf Islands National Seashore, including West Ship Island, have been affected by the oil spill and oil is on the beaches and maybe in the water adjacent to beach areas. The situation along Seashore beaches is subject to change daily.
All beaches and waters within the park are open, however if oil is present, visitors are advised to avoid contact with the water and to avoid contact with oil and oily materials in the water or on the beach.
Clean up crews may be present at many locations working to remove oil from beaches.
The following information is taken from the Mississippi DEQ Website:
“… beaches are not closed and beach goers may continue to use these beaches, but the agencies advise people to use common sense and take appropriate precautions including:
• Avoid direct skin contact with the oil.
• If you get oil on your skin, wash it off with soap and water.
• Wash your hands before eating to avoid accidentally swallowing oil.
• If you get oil on clothing, wash it in the usual way.
• Prolonged exposure to the oil may cause some to have a skin rash.
• There is no need to use harsh detergents, solvents or other chemicals to wash oil from your skin or clothing, and their use is discouraged...”
